The LIC Community Boathouse is kicking off a summer on the Queens waterfront with a fundraiser at Alewife next week.

The event takes place May 12 starting at 7 p.m. at Alewife, 5-14 51st Ave. It will provide an opportunity for Long Island City residents to contribute to the boathouse’s efforts as well as to meet the organization, hear plans for the upcoming season and get involved.

“This [event] is for the boathouse so that we can continue to bring free programming to all of Queens and all of New York City,” Boathouse leadership committee member Luilly Andrade said.

The LIC Community Boathouse offers seasonal programming including kayak rides at Hallets Cove, weekend paddles at Anable Basin, shoreline cleanups and more, according to the organization’s website.

General admission costs $10 and VIP admission, which comes with two raffle tickets, a drink ticket and snacks, costs $35.

There will be a number of raffle and door prizes contributed by local businesses, including a prize from Brooklyn Boulders Queensbridge, Andrade said. A guided tour by the LIC Boathouse will also be awarded.

Andrade said funds will go toward the LIC Boathouse’s equipment and maintenance costs. The organization does not have a specific funding goal, he said, but would like to see 80 to 100 people attend the fundraiser.

“It’s more importantly about having community members at the event, more so than a dollar number,” he said. “We want to be more out there in the community and say, “hey, you’ve seen us out in the river, come meet us.”

Dates and times of upcoming Boathouse events throughout the summer are posted online here.

Tickets for next week’s fundraiser can be purchased here.

Queens leaders react to New Year’s night mass shooting at Jamaica event space, security measures scrutinized

Queens elected officials were left shocked and dismayed by a mass shooting outside a Jamaica event space on New Year’s night that left ten young people injured while they waited to get into a “celebration of life” for a teen who was gunned down in Brooklyn.

An urgent manhunt is underway for the four young men who opened fire on people who were waiting in line outside the Amazura Concert Hall at 91-12 144th Place at around 11:20 p.m. Police from the 103rd Precinct in Jamaica responded to multiple 911 calls of shots fired and arrived at the scene to find six women and four men between the ages of 16 and 19, who suffered gunshot wounds as they ran for their lives when the gunmen fired at least thirty shots.
