New School Serving Children on the Autism Spectrum to Open in Long Island City

A new school serving children on the autism spectrum will open in Long Island City next month.

Academy For Young Minds (AYM) will open in a new building located at 11-20 46th Rd. this September.

The independent private school is geared towards mid-to high-functioning school-aged children who fall on the autism spectrum. It will serve students ages five through 12 when classes begin on Sept. 9.

AYM strives to ensure that all its students achieve their highest potential as well as successful integration into society.

AYM utilizes the Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), a form of therapy and an educational model based on the science of learning and behavior, to inform its teaching. In that way, AYM uses scientific evidence to design its educational programs for students. The school is also officially affiliated with the ABA masters program at Hunter College.

The school’s educational model combines AYM with personalized instruction as well as a multi-disciplinary approach.

AYM offers students a variety of small class sizes, as well as occupational, physical and speech therapy and counseling services. It also has a full-time nurse on site.

The school facility has 12 classrooms, a sensory gym, indoor gym and outdoor playground as well as state-of-the-art technology. The sensory gym offers a therapeutic environment for students to work on their core strength, balance, fine- and gross-motor skills, sensory integration, behavior, attention, language, and social interaction skills.

AYM is hosting a “Sensory Friendly Family Day” at its school building next Tuesday, Aug. 10 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. RSVP is required.

The school also hosts open houses every Tuesday by RSVP.
