Socrates Sculpture Park’s international film series kicks off July 2nd with the screening of a documentary about Russian Punk band Pussy Riot.

This year’s film series—called Outdoor Cinema 2014– will take place in the park every Wednesday night throughout July and August.  Each week a different foreign film will be screened.

The series — which has been put together by Socrates, Film Forum and Rooftop Films–will start with the award-winning Russian documentary “Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer,” a film by Maxim Pozdorovkin and Mike Lerner.

The film follows the story of three female members of a Russian punk rock band, whose arrest following an anti-Putin protest performance at a Moscow cathedral brought them international fame.

The film won the best documentary award at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. The screening on July 2nd will be it’s first screening since it was banned in Moscow last December.

The eight-week outdoor series will feature international titles from Argentina, Central Africa, France, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, Senegal, Sweden, and the U.K. – selected by Mike Maggiore, Film Forum’s program director, and Mark Elijah Rosenberg, the artistic director, for Rooftop Films.

“With this impressive roster of foreign films, Film Forum has once again put forth an extraordinary season that truly reflects the cultural diversity of Queens,” said Socrates Sculpture Park’s Executive Director, John Hatfield.

Each of the films will be presented in its native language, with English subtitles.

The organizers will also offer regional cuisine and public performances based on the culture of the movie.

Pre-screening starts at 7 p.m. with screenings starting at sunset.  Click for schedule.
