Live at the Gantries Kicks Off Today

An outdoor concert series along the Long Island City waterfront is returning once again this summer.

Live at the Gantries, the name of the music series, will begin on July 10 and play every Tuesday at 7 p.m. until August 28 at Gantry Plaza State Park.

The eight concerts span multiple genres including jazz, blues, folk, rock and roll, Indian music, and hip hop. Performances are held at the foot of the gantries within the plaza at 49th Avenue and Center Boulevard.

Live at the Gantries is organized by the Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College, and brings Queens-based musicians for all to hear for free. Co-presenters include NYS Parks, Queens Theatre, and Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer.

The full list of performances for the 2018 season:

July 10: Lady and The Vamps: Jazz, Blues, Pop Vocal Ensembles
July 17: Lindsay Lou: Americana, Folk and Bluegrass Ensemble
July 24: FDR Drive: Classic Hits of Rock n Roll
July 31: Valerie Green/ Dance Entropy:  Modern Dance with a Splash!
August 7: Maestro Khan, “East Meets West”: Classical Indian Music and dance ensemble.
August 14: The Barlett Band with The Next Generation Sound: The hits from Bebop to Hip Hop
August 21: The Chuck Braman Quintet:  Reimagining the jazz classics from the famed Blue Note Recordings.
August 28: Supermambo: A Vibes Tribute to Tito Puente

All events start at 7 p.m.

Hundreds of warehouse workers and drivers walked off the job and joined the picket line outside the massive DBK4 Amazon fulfillment center in Maspeth on Thursday morning as the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) launched the largest strike ever against the $2 trillion corporation in New York City, Atlanta, Southern California, San Francisco, and Illinois.

Amazon workers at other facilities across the country say they are prepared to join them to protest unfair labor practices after the IBT set a Dec. 15 deadline for Amazon to begin negotiations on a new agreement. The union was ignored.
