West Nile Spraying to Take Place Across Sections of Western and Central Queens Sept. 17

The zone to be sprayed by the DOH on Thursday (Source: DOH)

Sept. 15, 2020 By Michael Dorgan

The city will be spraying pesticides to keep the number of mosquitoes at bay in parts of western and central Queens on Thursday.

The spraying will begin at around 8:30 p.m. and will continue until 6 a.m. Friday, according to the NYC Department of Health.

The spraying will occur largely south of the Long Island Expressway in sections of the 11101, 11104, 11373, 11374, 11375, 11378, 11378, 11385, 11415, 11418, 11432, and 11435 zip codes.

The area roughly spans from Dutch Kills in Long Island City to 164th street in Jamaica Hills.

The DOH will be spraying sections of Blissville, Briarwood, Forest Hills, Glendale, Jamaica Hills, Kew Gardens, Long Island City, Maspeth, Middle Village and Rego Park.

The health department says it will be spraying very low concentrations of DeltaGard or Anvil from trucks to reduce mosquito activity and combat the risk of the West Nile virus.

The pesticides, according to the DOH, pose no real danger to people and pets, but some individuals who are sensitive to spray ingredients may experience short term eye or throat irritation. People with respiratory conditions may also be affected.

The DOH recommends that residents stay indoors whenever possible during spraying.

Skin and clothing exposed to pesticides should be washed with soap and water.

The city will reschedule spraying until Monday, Sept. 21 should it rain Thursday.
