A 30-year-old man who was riding a scooter in Long Island City Wednesday evening is in critical condition after being struck by a hit-and-run SUV driver, according to police.

Police say that the 30-year-old was riding his scooter westbound on 44th Drive when he was hit at the intersection of Vernon Boulevard and 44th Drive.

The motorist, who police believe was in a black Porsche SUV, was travelling south bound on Vernon Boulevard at around 6 p.m. when he struck the scooter. The driver then fled the scene.

The 30-year-old was ejected from his scooter as a result of the collision, sustaining severe head trauma.

EMS responded and transported the man to NYC Health and Hospitals/Bellevue where he was listed in critical condition last night.

Police said Thursday morning that the man’s condition is unchanged.

Black Porsche SUV? What does he do for a living? People on motor bikes, regular bikes and anything electric ride around the streets as if they’re upstate with little or no traffic. They zig zag in and out of traffic, ride all over the road and don’t care about traffic laws. Sorry he got killed, but nobody takes responsibiltiy for their actions.

Op-ed | Public growth in Long Island City must yield public good in the One LIC Plan

Sep. 16, 2025 By State Senator Kristen Gonzalez

Long Island City is where I live—it’s my home. That’s why for the past few years, I’ve taken part in public meetings, provided testimony and joined community conversations around the OneLIC rezoning. From the beginning, I’ve insisted that building housing is necessary amid our city and state’s housing crisis; however, to support working New Yorkers, new development should be affordable and intentionally benefit our communities.
