Long-time Queens Assembly Member Catherine Nolan has announced that she is recovering from cancer surgery.

Nolan, who has represented the 37th Assembly District since 1985, said that she has undergone surgery and is now recuperating at home.

She did not reveal what type of cancer she has – nor the extent of the cancer – but said it will require further treatment.

“I want to announce that I am home recovering from surgery and will be following it with chemotherapy,” Nolan said in a statement Thursday.

Nolan, whose district covers Long Island City, Sunnyside, Ridgewood and parts of Astoria, said that her illness has not affected her work and she will continue to serve her constituents.

“I have been able to fully participate and vote in the Assembly’s legislative session via zoom,” she said, adding that issues like paid family leave, workers’ rights, education and health care are at the front of her agenda.

“I am fortunate to have a great medical team, a loving family, and a very dedicated staff,” Nolan said.

Nolan, a Ridgewood resident, spent 12 years as the Assembly’s education chair from 2006-2018 and was appointed deputy speaker in 2018. She retained her seat last year and was a supporter of Amazon coming to Long Island City.

She said that her office remains available to all constituents and has asked people to take care of their health during the pandemic.

“[I] urge everyone to wear a mask, get vaccinated if you qualify, and see doctors for medical appointments as needed.”

Borough President recommends approval of OneLIC Neighborhood Plan with conditions

Queens Borough President Donovan Richards announced on Monday a long list of recommendations to approve the city’s OneLIC Neighborhood Plan with conditions.

The sweeping proposal entered the city’s Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP) in April, following certification by the City Planning Commission, and aims to transform a large portion of Long Island City with new zoning rules that would create nearly 14,700 housing units—including 4,300 affordable homes—alongside 14,400 jobs, over 3.5 million square feet of commercial and industrial space and expanded access to the East River waterfront.
