A low-rise building in Long Island City that houses a religious center will soon be bulldozed to make way for a 7-story apartment complex.

A developer has filed plans to construct an apartment building at 11-36 45th Rd. that will contain 119 units as well as a house of worship. The existing 2-story building will be torn down. Patch was first to report the story.

The site is located between 11th Street and 21st Street and faces Murray Playground. The property is currently occupied by the Science of the Soul Study Center, a meditation center operated by Radha Soami Satsang Beas, a religious group formed in India.

The developer, George Xu, purchased the building from Radha Soami Satsang Beas for $26 million in 2019, city records show.

Xu filed plans in September to demolish the building, although the structure has yet to face the wrecking ball.

The proposed building will be 75 feet tall and will yield 80,500 square feet of residential space. The complex will also include 23,000 square feet of space for a house of worship, according to the plans.

It is unclear whether the Science of the Soul Study Center will occupy the space dedicated for a house of worship. However, it is likely since organizations often agree to sell properties to developers on the condition that the group is guaranteed a space in a future structure.

Raymond Chan, a Flushing-based architectural firm, is listed as the architect for the development. The firm also designed a 7-story apartment building on the next block, located at 46-20 11th St., and a 20-story mixed-use building at 42-10 27th St. near the Queensboro Plaza subway station.
