A new eyecare store has opened in the Court Square section of Long Island City that offers everything from routine eye examinations to designer frames.
L EYE C OPTICS, located at 21-36 44th Drive, opened in January and is owned by Bryan Arango, a long-time optician, and his business partner Adam Kow, a Long Island City resident.
The store is located a block from the 7, E, M and G trains, and is a 2,000-square-foot modern space that was designed by Carlo Enzo Architecture.
“We opened in Court Square because we saw a need for eyecare in the area,” Kow said. “Long Island City is quickly developing, and we see an opportunity to help the growing population with their visual needs.”
The pair have two optometrists on staff and are in the process of hiring an ophthalmologist. The store provides its customers with routine eye exams and contact lens fittings, and their clients can be evaluated for diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, glaucoma, and other eye diseases.
They also offer emergency services—in case of sudden loss of vision or eye damage—as well as NYS DMV vision tests.
Arango said that his primary role involves cutting the lenses on site. A client’s prescription can be handled within hours if the lenses required are at the store. However, in some situations the prescription is sent to a manufacturer that will then provide Arango with the lenses that he will cut upon arrival.
“We’re capable of same day service depending on the prescription,” Arango said.
Arango, who has been cutting glasses for more than 20 years, said that the quick turnaround appeals to customers. He also said his years of experience is what keeps his customers coming back.
Kow said that many residents suffer from dry-eye issues, attributing it to people working from home and the overuse of computers and digital devices.
He said that they will soon be offering a specialized treatment for the dry eye condition—beyond the standard therapies such as eye drops.
They plan to offer Optilight—a light based, non-invasive treatment performed in the area below the eyes to manage dry eye. It is the first and only IPL treatment that has been FDA approved for dry eye. They believe that they will be the only location in Long Island City to offer this treatment.
However, some of their customers have been drawn to the store by the wide variety of independent and designer frames they offer.
“We carry pretty much anything that you have in mind,” Arango said. “We have independent lines to brand names. People are excited when they see what we have to offer.”
The owners of L EYE C OPTICS said they are excited to be part of the thriving LIC community. They say that they are committed to providing comprehensive eye exams, designer frames, contact lenses, and state-of-the-art technology to ensure the perfect prescription and fit.
L EYE C OPTICS is open six days per week.
