A new market specializing in premium Japanese fish is coming to Long Island City.

MOGMOG will open in December on the ground floor at 5-35 51st Avenue, a four-story mixed-use building in Hunters Point, according to the manager of the store.

The company is moving into a space previously occupied by the holistic wellness center Sacred Waters. The location is situated between the 51st Bakery & Cafe and the children’s arts space Playday.

The owner has been renovating the 800 square foot space since September and plans to open in the middle of December. The market will offer takeout only and there will be no seats inside.

The market will sell a range of high-quality fish like Sawara, madai, uni and rockfish, which will be imported from Japan. It will also offer tuna, yellowtail and salmon as well as locally sourced meats like beef and pork.

MOGMOG is owned by Jun Odani, a Long Island City resident who is originally from Japan. It will be Odani’s first store having worked for years supplying Japanese fish to sushi restaurants in Manhattan. Odani brings fish into the country from Japan via plane twice a week, the manager said.

The growing Asian population in the area has found it difficult to source premium fish from Japan, according to the manager, and the company aims to fill a gap in the market.

“There is a big demand for fresh fish from Japan here and we are looking to resolve this problem,” the manager said.

The company will also serve sushi rolls and sushi bowls, as well as prepared meals called bento boxes. Bento boxes typically consist of rice, vegetables, and meat or fish.

There will also be a variety of vegetables on sale as well as drinks like Japanese green tea, juices and sodas. The market will also offer traditional Japanese dry snacks like okashi.

MOGMOG will be open Mondays through Sundays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
