Murray’s Cheese to Open Restaurant, Specialty Food Store at Queens Plaza

Jackson Park (QueensPost)

Oct. 16, 2018 By Christian Murray

Greenwich Village cheese staple Murray’s Cheese is opening a combined retail store and restaurant in Queens Plaza next year, company representatives said.

The store will be located on the corner of Jackson Avenue and Queens Plaza South, at 28-30 Jackson Ave, in one of the three mega towers that is part of the 1,800-unit Jackson Park development.

Murray’s will split its ground floor space in two, with one side being dedicated to a restaurant and the other to selling specialty food products.

Mindi Sachs, a public relations manager for Murray’s, said the company aims to open the Jackson Park location in spring 2019.

Representatives of the company told a Community Board 2 committee last week that the restaurant component will consist of about 50 seats and will offer fast-casual items such as sandwiches, burgers and salads like its restaurant on Bleecker St. The company plans to be open from 7 a.m. through midnight each day, with the board giving the company the green light for a liquor license.

Murray’s will sell its cheese, wine, beer and specialty food products in the area next to the restaurant.

The company, founded in Greenwich Village in 1940 by Murray Greenberg, currently has three brick and mortar locations. It has a retail store at 254 Bleecker St., a restaurant at 264 Bleecker St. and a retail operation in Grand Central Station.

The company also has an existing presence in Long Island City. It has its cheese caves—to age the cheese–and its central offices at 25-19 Borden Ave.

The company distributes its product to 650 restaurants and stores nationwide from its Borden Avenue location. It’s e-commerce business is based there, too.

Murray’s was bought in 2017 by Kroger, a Cincinnati-based company that operates supermarkets across the country.

Let’s see who will be able to eat and afford a chunk of cheese at this new place. CB2 offered free cheese as a sampling at the committee meeting? Wow I recall the Dept. of Agriculture cheese trucks giving a block of American cheese at the NYCHA projects when I was a kid in the Bronx. How times have changed. I wonder how much Kroger dropped in JVB’s war chest as a friendly donation or in his Not-for-Profit 501(c)(4) ????

I’m opening my own Murray’s Cheese as well. Except instead of cheese it will be me rambling about emails for a fee; and instead of Murray Greenberg it will be about Hillary. It’s gonna be called Hillary’s Emails.
