Long Island City residents are in shock after a 26-year-old man jumped to his death Sunday night from a 33-story building in Hunters Point.
The man died after leaping from the south tower of the Gotham Point development, with his body found in front of 56-27 2nd St.
Officers from the 108th Precinct responded to a 911 call of an injured man just before 7 p.m. and arrived on scene. They found the man unconscious and unresponsive with severe head trauma and injuries, police said.
EMS responded to the location and pronounced the man dead at the scene. No criminality is suspected at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.
Hunters Point Civic Association president James Edstrom commented on the incident on Facebook.
“This is so horrible when someone feels this low that they had to end their life,” Edstrom wrote. “I feel horrible someone in our community felt so much pain to take their own life and members of our community had to witness this.”

God, this is heartbreaking. And it’s not even the first one around here lately, which makes it even worse.
Not to take away from the tragedy, but… are we seriously quoting a neighborhood Facebook group admin as some kind of authority here? Since when did starting your own ‘civic association’ make you the go-to voice on stuff like this? Especially one with a controversial online history?
I get that local input matters, but maybe we could hear from actual experts on mental health or community support instead, especially given the pattern we’re seeing. Just a thought.
