Macy’s set off its Fourth of July fireworks off two barges in the East River last night providing Long Island City residents with a close-up view.
The fireworks illuminated the sky for a five-minute display, providing spectators on both sides of the East River with great views.
“It was short but impactful and enjoyed by many,” said Rob Basch, president of the Hunters Point Parks Conservancy. “It was also nice to get some authorized fireworks instead of the random reckless ones we’ve seen other nights.”
Macy’s is setting off fireworks in undisclosed locations each night this week, with last night’s being the first in a series. The short shows are being filmed each night and will be part of a national broadcast on Saturday, July 4 that will feature performances and a short grand finale firework show.
The LICPost broke the news at around 6:30 p.m. Monday that the fireworks would be set off near Long Island City. The mayor’s office announced that they would be set off in the East River at around 8 p.m.
The shows are short and their locations are being kept under wraps in order to prevent thousands of people from traveling to and gathering in a single location to watch the show.
