A Long Island City man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the shooting murder of an Astoria resident at the Ravenswood Houses in December 2017.
Javyn McNish, 21, was sentenced Monday for the brutal killing of Jerell Lewis, 20, whom he chased and shot near the housing complex around 4 p.m. on Dec. 2, 2017.
Lewis was shot in the back and hand. One of the shots to his back struck his spinal cord and instantly paralyzed him, according to Acting Queens District Attorney John M. Ryan.
When Lewis fell to the ground, McNish approached him and repeatedly beat him in the face with the gun and killed him.
McNish was seen fleeing the scene in surveillance video obtained by police. He was found hiding in a nearby apartment moments after the shooting.
“The defendant has been held accountable and now punished for gunning down a young man and pistol whipping him in broad daylight,” Ryan said. “He showed a total disregard and lack of respect for human life by viciously shooting a weapon while running in the streets.”
McNish was convicted of second-degree murder last month, according to the district attorney’s office.
