Hip-Hop celebration comes to 5 Pointz Sunday

Aug. 9, 2013 Staff Report

A celebration marking the 40th Anniversary of Hip-Hop is scheduled to take place at 5 Pointz on Sunday.

DJ Kool Herc, who arguably pioneered Hip-Hop, will perform “Back to the Roots”.

The story goes that 40 years ago Clive Campbell (aka DJ Kool Herc) created Hip-Hop after he brought two turntables and a microphone to a birthday party for his sister, Cindy, when the family lived in the Bronx.

According to legend, Campbell, a Jamaican immigrant, started manipulating the rhythmic sections of songs on vinyl records to extend the musical beats while urging people to dance.

The blueprint for Hip-Hop (scratching, breaking and rapping) was born.

Details: Back to the Roots, 5Pointz, 45-46 Davis St., LIC, Aug. 11, 5 pm, free.
