Significant parking restrictions will be in place in Hunters Point this weekend leading up to the Macy’s annual Fourth of July fireworks display.
The NYPD will be putting in place widespread restrictions as it looks to clear the area for the large number of spectators expected to come to the waterfront to view them. In previous years, tens of thousands of spectators have come to the area.
A “frozen zone” will be in place between Vernon Boulevard and Center Boulevard, from 44th Drive to 54th Avenue, beginning at 10 p.m. on July 3 through 11 p.m. on July 4, according to the NYPD.
The areas impacted include all side streets within the zone, including 2nd Street, 5th Street, Borden Avenue, 51st Avenue, 50th Avenue, 49th Avenue, 45th Road, 45 Avenue and 44th Drive.
Vehicles parked in the restricted area will be towed.
Macy’s will be staging the production of its fireworks special from Hunters Point South Park and will be taking over the park. The park will be closed from the afternoon of July 3 through July 4.
Viewers will be able to watch the display from nearby Gantry Plaza State Park instead.
This year’s fireworks display, which has become an annual tradition since 1976, will mark a return to its typical grand display after a scaled down performance last year that saw smaller displays take place over several days to discourage large gatherings and prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Five barges for the fireworks display will be placed in the East River in between East 26th Street and East 40th Streets. There will also be fireworks shot off of the Empire State Building from the 72nd, 86th and 103rd floors.
The fireworks are scheduled to begin at 9:25 p.m. and will be broadcast live on NBC, following a series of musical performances.

Finally, getting the food trucks off Center Boulevard. Many are unlicensed.
During the pandemic, many regulation were not enforced. Let’s tighten up at least this. Circus atmosphere every night, with cars and people milling around way past sundown. Quiet recreation was the original concept for both NYState and city sections. Now, chaos. There was even a fire started on one of the wooden piers.
It took the 4th. to clear the trucks. So: Ban all parking on Center Blvd. Quiet achieved.
