The Board of Elections released the certified results for the June 23 primary Wednesday and declared incumbent Carolyn Maloney as the winner in the contested 12th Congressional race.
The BOE disclosed the official tally today more than a month after the primary, as election officials worked to count an unprecedented number of absentee ballots cast in light of the coronavirus pandemic. Maloney, according to the official results, secured her seat by a 8,000-plus vote margin.
Her challenger Suraj Patel, however, has still refused to concede in the race to represent the district, which spans Astoria and Long Island City, as well as the east side of Manhattan and Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
Patel said he wouldn’t concede saying that every vote has yet to be counted. His campaign said about 12,500 votes were tossed out for minor technicalities.
“Given that, I cannot responsibly concede,” he said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Maloney, who has served in Congress for several decades, celebrated her victory.
“I’m thrilled the voters of NY-12 have decided to return me to Congress for another term, with a decisive winning margin that clearly reflects the will of the voters,” she said in a statement.
“This has been a historic election, with historic turnout and participation – and a historic wait time for results.”
The incumbent was first elected to the 14th Congressional District in 1992 and has represented the 12th Congressional District since 2013.
She is expected to easily win the November general election for her seat.
