A jam-packed fundraiser for breast cancer awareness will be taking place this Sunday by the Long Island City waterfront.

The Oct. 1 event will be located at Center Blvd. and Borden Ave near Hunter’s Point South Park and will run from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The event includes a medley of family activities like live music, bouncy castles, a dunk-a-cop tank, and a magic show. Basketball, face painting, and other carnival games will also be available at the event.

Car owners can get their cars washed at the event, and attendees can also participate in a raffle. Food and beverages will also be sold at the fundraiser, along with shirts and accessories, All of the event’s proceeds will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

The event is sponsored by a line-up of community groups and establishments, including the Hunters Point Civic Association, LIC Landing by Coffeed, the Long Island City Partnership, and the Gantry Parent Association. The NYPD’s 108th Precinct is also sponsoring the event.

The Hunters Point Park Conservancy, also a sponsor, will be hosting a two-hour Eagles tribute concert toward the later part of the day. The concert will begin at 3:00 p.m., and is sponsored in part by the Queens Council of the Arts and NYC Ferry.

Rob Basch, president of the Hunters Point Parks Conservancy, said the event is a way for the community to bond and get together to help.

“It’s a very important cause,” Bash said. “We hope to raise awareness and its a great thing when the community comes together.”

The fundraiser came about after officer Tiffany Makely of the 108 precinct said she wanted to bring a breast cancer awareness event to the local neighborhood. Makely said she was inspired by the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Flushing, which the 108 precinct usually participates in.

“This year we decided to get the community involved—it’s the first time we’re doing it,” Makely said. “It’s evolved into something I couldn’t even imagine.”

Makely hopes that the event can become a mainstay for the community after the first year.
