In July 2013, several Dutch Kills residents joined elected officials at the intersection of 39th Avenue and 29th Street to call on the City to take action to prevent traffic accidents at the location.
Yesterday, almost six years to the day, the DOT joined the same elected officials and many residents for a press conference to showcase the recent installation of an all-way stop sign and traffic markings at that very spot.
Despite the years-long delay, the DOT said the new traffic safety measure was indicative of its commitment to keeping the area safe. The intersection is near several churches and schools, as well as the recently revamped Dutch Kills Playground.
“The new all-way stop sign and upgraded markings at 39th Avenue and 29th Street are part of our ongoing commitment to work with the Dutch Kills community and local elected leaders to make this intersection even safer,” said NYC DOT Queens Borough Commissioner Nicole Garcia.
The DOT added pedestrian ramps to increase visibility last year as well as new signage.
The unveiling comes six years after State Sen. Mike Gianaris called on the DOT to conduct a traffic study of the neighborhood. At the time, he noted the need given the area’s growth, with the influx of residents, hotels and businesses.
“Dutch Kills has been changing rapidly and our infrastructure has not kept up,” Gianaris said Friday. “Improving pedestrian safety will keep our neighbors safe in this growing community and I am glad the DOT heard our pleas.”
Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, who also advocated for safety measures six years ago, thanked the Dutch Kills community for keeping the pressure on the DOT.
“This stop sign will undoubtedly improve safety and help prevent a tragedy from occurring,” Van Bramer said.
