Vernon and 41st Avenue (GMAPs)

A bicyclist was struck and killed by a truck at the intersection of Vernon Boulevard and 41st Avenue Saturday, according to police.
The 36-year-old victim was hit by a private sanitation truck at 5:13 pm as the driver turned east onto 41st Avenue from Vernon Blvd.
Police and EMS arrived on the scene and found the victim lying on 41st Avenue unconscious and unresponsive. He was pronounced dead.
The victim was identified as Hoyt Jacobs of Bushwick.
The driver of the truck remained on the scene.
There have been no arrests although the police are still investigating the incident.

Very sad. This is just a brief stretch where the lane shared. I typically ride through the park here (at least while the sun is out). For the most part, i consider the ride from LIC to Astoria fairly safe.

These shared lanes are just asking for tragic results.
very sad indeed but it is not always the driver’s fault many cyclist do not follow
the rules of the road and put themselves in danger
You mean like cycling through a red light, almost hitting me in the crosswalk, then giving me the finger when I issued an explicative laden protest? There are many well mannered cyclists out there, but the cyclist jihadists really need to go.

Doreen: It’s good that you worry about the safety of cyclists and pedestrians when you drive! The facilities provided to them by the city are inadequate and put them in harm’s way far too often. If you don’t already, may I suggest that you vocally support better cycling and pedestrian infrastructure in NYC? Wider sidewalks, traffic-calming street designs, protected cycle tracks and more “complete street” designs mean less frustration and worry for drivers, and a safer ride for those outside the cars!
