A new bakery that serves homestyle Asian desserts has opened in Long Island City.

Multisweet, located at 21-52 44th Dr., opened on Feb. 12 and offers a range of handcrafted pastries and cakes that are made using fresh fruits and organic, seasonal ingredients.

Customers can savor Asian dessert specialties like salty egg yolk pastries, dry pork balls and durian mochi. There are also American favorites like shortcakes, egg tarts and puddings baked with an Asian twist.

The bakery makes custom-made cakes for special occasions and has a selection of vegan, gluten-free and low-calorie dessert options too.

The company also bakes cakes for pet birthdays that can be safely consumed by animals.

The bakery is owned by immigrants from China, Amber Zhao, Louise Hung and Jing Tang – and marks their first standalone location. The trio also operate a bakery out of a shared space in Manhattan that is open for takeout and delivery.

Zhao said they chose to open in Long Island City because it has a small neighborhood feel and they are familiar with the area.

“I have lived in Long Island City for three years and really love the community. People are so nice and we really wanted to open here,” Zhao said.

Zhao said the owners are undeterred about opening a new business during a pandemic since their Manhattan location has proven successful. It opened in January 2020 – around two months before the city went into lockdown.

“We have built up a solid customer base over the last year. There is pressure but we want to expand and we are confident in our products and service.”

The bakery has taken over the space that was occupied by LIC Market, a cafe/restaurant that closed in August. The owners of LIC Market said they closed due to the economic fallout of the pandemic.

Multisweet will seat about 15 people indoors when restrictions are lifted. There is also outdoor space that can seat 20, Zhao said.

The bakery is currently open for takeout and delivery only and will open for indoor and outdoor dining on March 14.

The bakery is open Wednesdays through Mondays from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

I wish them luck. The community supported Alex and Lisa because they made something previously unavailable. They had seating for at least 30-40 indoors plus the patio. This space prior to being LIC Market was a very hard sell and several businesses went belly up.

Wonder if high rents or high prices will tell the tale of how long they will last

While I’m happy to see LIC business opening, this ABSOLUTELY BREAKS MY HEART. This location will forever be LIC Market. I miss it so much and hope they find a way to return sometime somewhere.
