May 20, 2016 Staff Report

A new 160-room hotel is now open on Queens Plaza North.

The Marriott Courtyard Hotel opened Tuesday at 29-15 Queens Plaza North. Focused on business travelers, the hotel includes a computer library, several meeting rooms, a 1,200 square-foot gym and a Starbucks, according to Marriott.

The hotel also shares its property with 132 residential apartments.

“From day one, Courtyard has prided itself as a brand that listens to business travelers,” vice president and global brand manager Callette Nielsen said in a statement. “Our guests want a room that has purpose and flexibility that enables a seamless transition between relaxing and working. Courtyard is designed to offer them a relaxing and functional space to work the way they want to, when they want to.”

Tuesday marked the hotel’s soft opening; a grand opening ceremony is planned for June.

The Courtyard Hotel is steps away from the Hilton Garden Inn, which opened one year ago, and blocks from several other hotels in the Queens Plaza region.

According to Long Island City Partnership data released in February, there are currently 27 hotels with 2,500 rooms in Long Island City, and nearly 40 more hotels in planning or construction.

Why are we housing Homeless in Hotels (Some Luxury) and Motels if there is such a need for 40 more? All on the taxpayers dime.

Thank you Astoria resident. I will post anything that seems excessive such as 40 more hotels. Tourism is fine but we have an over abundance of tourists as it is. I don’t push my ideas. Sometime enough is enough and I have a right as anyone to speak my mind.

Don’t take it personally. The person doesn’t know you or any thing much about you. They are spewing hate and critical remarks from their own sense of failure and self-criticism. Their hate is about them, not you. Thank you for posting and I do enjoy reading your comments.

It should be illegal to build any hotels without a bowling alley. I don’t want rich people sleeping in my neighborhood.

Hotels are all that this area can support

most of the high rise rentals are like long term hotels anyway

trust me i am a former resident in one of them

You are believing the Hotel chains surveys and marketing. I go by what I see. I also read there are 28 hotels in LIC/Astoria area. Isn’t that’ enough?

obviously not, there are plans for 40 more. Which means that 40 more times we are going to have to listen to you tell us how you know better than the experts because you were born here.

And 40 more times we have to read your vile responses to him. Can he have an opinion or is that reserved for people who think like you do? You’re a very disrespectful individual.

You must be new here? I have been coming here for years to read news about my new neighborhood. I love watching this neighborhood grow and every new building and improvement gets discussed here. MRLIC has, for years, been insulting me and everyone else here who lives in the newer buildings. I am sorry if I am getting a little immature but he is like a fly that just won’t go away. Keeps buzzing. Need to swat it.

i thought you were a fan of bringing industry back to LIC? There is no bigger industry in this city than tourism. You should be welcoming hotels with open arms.

-MRLIC Yes, you “think” there are more then enough hotels in the area but that’s in complete contradiction to what industry experts, industry analyst, Sheraton market analysts, Marriott market and research analyst. Hilton analysts and the thousands of others who compile the data and research that goes into the decision process that goes into opening a 160 room hotel but everything should fall on what you “think”.

Frank

No, you are wrong. All those experts conspired solely to build hotels to aggravate MRLIC, not to make money.

And, they are all LUXURY hotels! We don’t need anymore luxury hotels. We need more bowling alleys! Actually, we need more low budget hotels with bowling alleys, and stores, but not rich people stores. We need stores for poor people. And movie theaters. And we need hotels for poor dogs, not for the rude dogs that don’t let me cross sidewalks when it is snowing but for the kinder, older dogs who step aside when I am coming and don’t make the snow yellow. Oh yeah, infrastructure! We need more subways, but ones that will only serve the residents who have been here for more than 20 years because those rich, rude, hippies, I mean yipsters, or whatever you call them, they bowl at these places that have music and lights and crap.
