A 19-year-old from Long Island City has been arrested and charged with murder in the shooting death of an Astoria resident Saturday afternoon.
Javyn McNish was charged with murder in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon Monday morning after the death of Jarrel Lewis, 20, who was shot in the torso and the hand on Saturday, according to the Queens DA. The incident happened at around 4:10 p.m. near 36th Avenue and 14th Street in Astoria.
Lewis was unconscious and unresponsive when police arrived at the scene, and died after he was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the NYPD.
McNish was identified on video surveillance, the Queens DA said.
“The defendant showed no respect for human life when he viciously shot a 20-year-old man who had a long life ahead of him,” said District Attorney Richard Brown in a statement. “He will be vigorously prosecuted.”
The Queens Criminal Court ordered McNish be held without bail. He will return to court on Dec. 18. If convicted, McNish faces up to 25 years to life in prison.
