Despite the snow and sleet, a groundbreaking ceremony was held in Long Island City this morning for a luxury hotel that is about to be built in the Queens Plaza/Court Square area.
The ceremony marked the beginning of the construction phase on a 224-room Crowne Plaza Hotel. It also represented the continuation of the hotel boom in Long Island City where about one dozen hotels have been constructed in the past six years.
Officials gathered inside a heated tent on the construction site at 25-10 42nd Road and provided details on what the Crown Plaza Hotel will offer.
The hotel will be 11 stories tall and will include a conference center—as well as a sky bar lounge and a grand ballroom that can accommodate 300 guests.
The grand ballroom will be located on the 11th floor, while a sky bar/lounge will be on the roof. It will feature skyline views of Manhattan.
The second through tenth floors will contain guestrooms.
Hotel developers are capitalizing on the neighborhood’s proximity to Manhattan — and lower nightly rates. Many of the accommodations start at $185 per night — about $150 less than Manhattan hotels.
