Citi Bike to reach LIC by end of 2013

Citibike

Dec. 16, 2012 By Christian Murray

The NYC Department of Transportation and New York City Bike Share have delayed the launch of the “Citi Bike” program until May 2013.

Citi Bike, which will provide anyone 16 years or older with the ability to rent a bicycle at about 300 designated locations around the city, was originally planned to be ready in March.

However, the DOT said earlier this month that it has had to delay the roll out, since Hurricane Sandy damaged electronic equipment in its Brooklyn Navy Yard office. Much of that equipment suffered from water damage and has had to be refurbished.

Citi Bike will start the program with at least 5,500 bikes in Manhattan and Brooklyn. It will eventually reach Long Island City—Hunters Point, Court Square and the Dutch Hills section of the neighborhood–by the end of 2013.

“DOT has worked around the clock to restore vital transportation links following the storm and that includes putting Citi Bike on the road to recovery,” said DOT Commissioner

Janette Sadik-Khan, in a statement. “Despite the damage, New York will have the nation’s largest bike share system up and running this spring.”

Homeless men charged in deadly 7 train subway brawl in Woodside: DA

Three homeless men were arraigned in Queens Criminal Court on Tuesday and variously charged with felony robbery, attempted gang assault, and assault for allegedly stealing the belongings of a 69-year-old homeless man who was asleep on a Manhattan-bound 7 train in Woodside early Sunday morning.

The victim woke up and tried to regain his property. During the ensuing brawl, the victim fatally stabbed a 37-year-old assailant and slashed a second man. The victim has not been charged in the fatal stabbing. The investigation by the NYPD’s Queens Homicide Squad and members of the 108th Precinct in Long Island City remains ongoing.
