Menorah lighting at Gantry Plaza

The members of Chabad of Long Island City (10-31 Jackson Ave.) gathered to light their menorah in Gantry Plaza State Park on Sunday afternoon.
A cold and steady rain didn’t deter the small group, but Rabbi Zev Wineberg made sure to quicken the program’s pace.
“Let’s speed things up,” the rabbi said to trumpet player Anna Garcia, “because of the circumstances.”
The event began with a Chanukah Family Fun fair that started at noon inside P.S. 78’s multi-purpose room. The children watched a puppet show called Latkahs vs. Doughnuts, a story of two chefs whose rivalry splits a town in two before a rabbi arrives to unite the town and save the day.
At 3pm the crowd of nearly 50 people made its way to Gantry Plaza for the lighting ceremony, complete with the singing of Chanukah songs and dancing. The bad weather didn’t seem to bother the children.
“This is always one of our biggest gatherings,” said Rabbi Wineberg. “It’s a good thing we arranged to use P.S. 78 earlier today.”
