Hotel boom near Queensboro Bridge continues

Dec. 7, 2012 Staff Report

Many residents of the Dutch Kills section of Long Island City have been lobbying to curb the number of hotels being built in their neighborhood, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Currently, there are 10 hotels that have been built in the area (and are now open), with five more coming.  Of the five, three are under construction, while two others are planned.

The residents want to discourage hotels rising there, since many are near one- and two-family homes.

With the exception of hotels, there hasn’t been much in the way of residential development.

Dutch Kills is roughly bounded by 36th Avenue to the north, Queens Plaza North to the south, 21st Street to the west and 32nd Street to the east.

Thieves caught on camera stealing ATM from East Elmhurst store, one of nearly 50 heists by same crew: NYPD

Two thieves were caught on camera stealing an ATM at an East Elmhurst convenience store just before Christmas.

The NYPD says the two perpetrators belong to a three-man crew that has broken into 49 commercial establishments across Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the Bronx in the last four months of 2024. In each incident, two of the crooks haul away ATM machines before speeding away from each crime scene in stolen vehicles driven by a getaway driver.
