Andrews Grove/Shady Park Tree Removal Begins

Nov. 14, 2012 By Bill Parry

A team of woodsmen from upstate New York removed the downed trees from Andrew’s Grove/Shady Park on Thursday.

The men, who work for the NY State Department of Conservation, arrived at 8:00 am with heavy equipment to start the job. For the past two weeks, the men have been removing downed trees throughout the city.

“All of this [debris] is from just eight trees,” said Dan Gaidasz, who led the crew to clean up the downed trees that were about 50 feet tall.  Furthermore, “there are two more trees that we can’t touch because they’re leaning on a building. They’ll need to get a bucket truck to tackle that job.”

Ever since the trees have come down an active group of neighbors have been pushing for the planting of 20-30 foot trees to replace the old ones.  The park was one of the most popular areas in the neighborhood since young parents liked to take their children there because of the shade it provided.

The neighborhood group has come together through Facebook, with the formation of the “Friends of Shady Park” page. It already has more than 210 likes.

“As we build a coalition to rebuild Shady Park … we ask that you please continue to share your stories about why this park is special, and please share this page with your friends,” Sheila Lewandowski, wrote on the Facebook page.

Lewandowski lives across the street from the park.
