The LIC Post Waterfront 5K run/walk is back for its fifth year in Long Island City this June.
The rain-or-shine event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at 9 a.m., and is for both runners and walkers. The popular children’s dashes will take place on Center Boulevard immediately after the 5K.
“We are extremely proud of this event and are glad to bring it back for the fifth year,” said Christian Murray, publisher of the LIC Post, who is organizing the 5K with the Hunters Point Parks Conservancy and Woodside-Sunnyside Runners. “The event continues to be a great family occasion and a big success.”

All proceeds from the event will go to the Hunters Point Parks Conservancy (HPPC), a nonprofit group that was formed 22 years ago—originally as Friends of Gantry Plaza State Park— with the goal to take care of community parks, trees and natural areas.
Some of the money raised will go toward HPPC’s programming, such as live music performances, children’s events, as well as art and fitness classes. Funds will also go toward park upkeep and maintenance, according to Rob Basch, president of the HPPC and co-organizer.

“The Conservancy could not be more excited for Year 5 of the LIC Post Run. This event has turned into a celebration of our parks and community,” Basch said. “Supporting a healthy lifestyle and seeing the smiles on all the runners – young and old — is special. Thank you to all the runners, volunteers, elected officials and 108 Precinct for helping to make this happen.”
The race will begin on Center Boulevard and Borden Avenue. It will then go through the commercial district on Vernon Boulevard all the way over to Queensbridge Park (see map below for route) and then loop back to the starting line by passing through Gantry Plaza State Park.
Ann Sansaricq, a leader with the Woodside-Sunnyside Runners, said her group is looking forward to the event once again.
“The Long Island City waterfront is a great place for running,” Sansaricq said. “Look at the park, look at the views, you can’t beat it.”

Medals will be presented to the fastest three men and women. Ribbons will also be awarded to children who take part in the Center Boulevard Dash.
The day will include a post-race party with a DJ, food and drinks available at LIC Landing.
The event will cost $25 for adults and $15 for children for those who register before May 9. Prices will increase after that date.
Registrants will receive a limited-edition race T-shirt and free swag-bag items. Name-customized bibs for children and adults will also be available to those who register online while supplies last.
All participants will receive their results online and there will be photographs and video of them crossing the finish line.

Day before the Queens 10K. A shame, because I like this race but to schedule a race a day before a race that draws 10,000+ to the same borough is a shame. Hopefully they pick a better date for 2021.
