Deli to Open on Vernon Blvd, To Replace Shuttered Sandwich King

A deli is set to open on Vernon Boulevard at the former site of The Sandwich King, a gourmet sandwich shop that closed last month.

Pop’s Deli of LIC is expected to open at 47-31 Vernon Blvd. within two weeks, according to the deli’s manager Cailene Ivory. The deli’s owners plan to have a soft opening on Saturday, Oct. 19 and Sunday, Oct. 20.

The deli will offer a similar menu to The Sandwich King, which served dozens of sandwiches and a wide variety of sides before closing after being in business about eight months.

Ivory said that Pop’s menu, however, is still being finalized ahead of the grand opening. The menu is expected to be higher end and more elaborate than The Sandwich King.

Ivory said that the deli will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. seven days a week. In the summer, the deli will open from 6 a.m. until midnight.

The deli has seating to cater for up to 20 people, according to Ivory.

Called it when they first moved here and exclaimed that they were bringing good food to an area that lacked it (which is isn’t).

Sandwich King was so grim. The place was dirty and gross and not somewhere you’d want to eat in. But they took so damn long to make those incredibly mediocre sandwiches!!

LIC is changing. Why is it so hard to make good food with a little creativity? Sandwich King was expensive for no damn reason, because the quality was absolute shit.

Gave this place a chance at least 3-4 times and always walked away disappointed. The owner always stood around while customers waited a long time for their food to be ready. He seemed very lazy to me so I can’t say I’m shocked he failed. 8 months? Pretty sad. Hope the new place is better. Pretty low bar.

just gave this guy one chance, placed the order and never heard from them, call them half a dozen times and when they finally answered the phone they told me they had canceled my order because of the meat wasn’t ready, it was 2 pm in the afternoon, what time to they believe people eat lunch?

Yeah, for chrissakes enough with this higher-end, elaborate nonsense. That doesn’t make food any good! Some of the best meals I’ve had in NYC in my lifetime have been in the affordable, hole in the wall neighborhood places you were happy to discover. Upscale, higher end in New York has never meant nothing to me except getting ripped off. The very moment NYC embraced this nonsense was when the likelihood of finding a great authentic meal went down the toilet.

I agree the sign is very ugly. We should have standard for signage on Vernon. And yeh, the Sandwich King needed a lesson in customer service.

Business plans are rare these days I guess.

This is another doomed retail flail. There is a chinese deli right next door that is barely hanging on. Vernon rents are nearly $100 a square foot… how many sandwiches and coffee do you need to sell just to keep the lights on…. the money people wiz away on poorly thought out business plans is incredible.

But people still like to eat sandwiches, so theoretically, they should succeed. The problem is that too many businesses today are opened by people who don’t seem to understand how to make great, affordable food and create a vibe that appeals to the customers. If we had an authentic neighborhood spot like Mario’s or the old Butcher on Vernon near 50th Avenue, which made the most amazing Italian heroes I’ve ever had in my life, I have total confidence those places would be goldmines.

I challenge any new “higher end” deli, any one of then, to make a better sandwich than a Steak and Onions at the old vintage 1970s Butcher. Impossible.

I mean maybe they could leave the “of” if they have to but…the “S?!” Just one red letter in a word?! I think Pop had a little to drink before he designed it in MSPaint

Hopefully this place realizes that having the guy who makes the food sitting in front of the building chain smoking and cat calling women isn’t the recipe for success. Gave the sandwich joker, I mean king, several chances, and they continued to fail. One of the most poorly run businesses I’ve ever witnessed, I always thought I was on a hidden camera show, but I guess it was a real business after all.

Fingers crossed that this place is better than The Sandwich King. That establishment was poorly run and a huge disappointment, but the neighborhood could use a really good deli.

I knew the Sandwich King was doomed when the counter lady asked if I wanted Mayo on my sausage+peppers hero. Plus all the photos of hip hop celebrities who never ate there was kinda cheesy.

Homeless men charged in deadly 7 train subway brawl in Woodside: DA

Three homeless men were arraigned in Queens Criminal Court on Tuesday and variously charged with felony robbery, attempted gang assault, and assault for allegedly stealing the belongings of a 69-year-old homeless man who was asleep on a Manhattan-bound 7 train in Woodside early Sunday morning.

The victim woke up and tried to regain his property. During the ensuing brawl, the victim fatally stabbed a 37-year-old assailant and slashed a second man.
