State Sen. Mike Gianaris has announced $10,000 in funding for an environmentally focused school in Long Island City.

Gianaris announced the funding for Growing Up Green Charter School, an elementary and middle school located at 39-27 28th St., at its curriculum night on Monday, Sept. 23.

The funding will go toward special education programs in the school, according to Gianaris.

Growing Up Green rigorously educates its students about environmental issues as well as providing a standard education and Gianaris praised the school’s staff for their work.

“Every child deserves a full range of services and quality education and I am proud this funding will help secure just that for our students in western Queens,” said Gianaris“I thank the Growing Up Green team for their ongoing dedication to our community and their good work each and every day.”

Matthew Greenberg, Founder and Executive Director of Growing Up Green, said that parents are sending their children to the school because of the support it offers to students with disabilities and because of the supportive and flexible learning environment it offers.

“This grant will go towards funding for programs, tools, and supports that will benefit our students both inside and outside of the classroom and we are incredibly grateful,” said Greenberg.

The school says that its students will be prepared for high-performing high schools thanks to the school’s flexible approach to academics, as well as teaching students about environmental issues and teaching them a sense of self, according to Growing Up Green’s website.

Growing Up Green also operate an elementary school in Jamaica.
