Aug. 9, 2019 Staff Report

Planet Fitness, a gym franchise known for its low-cost memberships, is coming to Long Island City.

The company, which has more than 1,800 locations in North America including six in Queens, is opening an 18,000 square foot space at 29-22 Northern Blvd, in the 43-story ALTA LIC building.

The gym will operate on the ground floor and in the basement of the 467-unit building. The gym is expected to open in 2020. The ALTA LIC building is already open to residential tenants.

Planet Fitness calls itself a “Judgement Free Zone” — a welcoming and friendly community where people feel comfortable regardless of their fitness level. The company says it believes in providing a high-quality fitness experience at an affordable cost. Memberships start at $10 a month.

The company has existing locations in Astoria, Jackson Heights, Howard Beach, Ridgewood and two in Jamaica, Queens.

The Commercial Observer was first to report the story.

Bring Blink or Planet Fitness!!

Please bring this to Astoria south! There are barely any gyms in the area that are reasonable. Steinway has like 5 gyms, while on 21st area has none!

Guess What? There are many residents who live in buildings that don’t have gyms. Not everyone lives in one of these new buildings. There are also many people who work in the neighborhood who would use it.

Don’t forget about the office workers in The Jacx and 2 Gotham. This is going to be their only pre/post work gym option in the immediate area for the foreseeable future. Not a bad monopoly to have.

Let us see how long they last if they can’t make the rent in 6 months. Some of these luxury buildings have workout rooms.

Holy shit, you’re right!! You should call up the Planet Fitness corporate office right away and make sure they’re aware of this. There’s no way they already know about this and have factored it into their decision making process.

With your thinking I guess all the businesses that had to close in LIC had it all figured out also, right? Many businesses have projections and get sold a bill of goods by developers and neither of these things work out the way it is supposed to. It is not a exact science by any means.

I agree, who'd be dumb enough to trust NY real estate developers?

Except you when you voted for Trump.

What other closed businesses are you talking about? Do you even live in LIC? Are you a bot? This is one of the first businesses to go in the retail space brought on by the apartment building boom, so I’m not sure what other similar examples of business closures you’re referring to. Unless, of course, you’re purposely not trying to compare apples to apples. But you’d be a jackass if you did that. You’re not a jackass, are you?

Also, on a separate note, The Jacx is getting ready to open across the street, and this Planet Fitness will be the most convenient option for all those office workers that want to workout before or after work.

I work out of 28-11 QPN and was excited to see the “Planet Fitness coming soon” sign! No excuse for me not to work out now. I will have to upgrade to the Black Card though. I wish we had a Planet Fitness in Jamaica Estates, Queens (east of the Jamaica locations). There is plenty of space to buy rent. Blink Fitness is now here.
