Crescent Street between 43rd Avenue and 44th Road (GMaps)

The Court Square Civic Association’s first annual block party will take place this Sunday.

The event is being held on Crescent Street, between 43rd Avenue and 44th Road, from noon until 7 p.m. and as many as 600 people are expected to attend.

The block party will feature seven hours of live music, ranging from bluegrass to jazz. In addition, there will be a range of kid-friendly games and activities.

Court Square restaurants Indie LIC and M Wells Steakhouse are also co-organizing the event and both will be offering a special food menu for the block party that attendees can enjoy on the street.

The music will be performed by local New York rock bands. The organizers are also hopeful that members of the acclaimed band Talking Heads will play at the event, although nothing has been confirmed.

Frank Wu, the president of the Court Square Civic Association and an organizer, said that the decision to hold a large community event in Court Square stemmed from the area’s booming population.

Wu said that there is a need to liven up the rapidly-growing Court Square district by having a “fun community event.” He said that most Long Island City events take place in Hunters Point.

The event is free and the organizers want it to be laid back, with attendees encouraged to bring along lawn chairs. According to Wu, there will be an area set aside for groups and families who bring their lawn furniture to unwind.

Would have been a much nicer block party if they turned that lot into a park, instead of the glass box they’re building there now.
