Jobs available for unemployed LIC residents

Nov. 26, 2012 Staff Report

Many unemployed Long Island City residents will be eligible to take part in a New York State jobs program that will hire about 5,000 people to clean up debris in areas hard hit by Hurricane Sandy.

Governor Cuomo, in announcing the plan, said the jobs will pay about $15 an hour and could last as long as six months. They will be available to residents in those communities that were most affected by the storm, including sections of New York City.

State officials will focus on hiring young people as well as the long-term unemployed.

To be eligible, prospective workers must be unemployed, at least 18 and live on Long Island, in the five boroughs of New York City or in Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster or Westchester Counties.

Residents can apply for jobs by calling 1-888-469-7365 or by filling out the following form.

About 800 people had already signed up for temporary jobs as part of the program. Some were scheduled to begin work today.
