Movie Schedule For LIC Waterfront Released, Begins with The Wizard of Oz Next Week

The schedule for this season’s outdoor movie screenings on the Long Island City waterfront has been released, featuring a lineup of family friendly and classic films.

The free screenings for CinemaLIC, organized by the Hunters Point Parks Conservancy (HPPC) and Nest Seekers, were selected from a survey conducted earlier this year, where hundreds of park-goers told the group what they wanted to see there.

The once-a-month movie screening kicks off with The Wizard of Oz on May 18 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., followed by Moonstruck in June and Sleepless in Seattle in July. August will see Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid before topping off with a screening of Ratatouille in September. The films are all free.

The HPPC says attendees will get an upgraded viewing experience this year with a new 30 foot inflatable screen and enhanced video projection equipment.

“This will provide better color, clarity and sound and make for and even better experience for all movie goers,” the HPPC.

Rob Basch, HPPC President, calls the park “the best movie theatre anywhere.”

“It is important for the Conservancy that we build community in our parks and provide a welcoming and safe environment for all,” Basch said. “Cinema LIC delivers on this commitment as it provides perfect family entertainment for all.”

LIC Landing, which is hosting the movie screenings, will also offer food and beverages for purchase during the screenings.

Nest Seekers said it was glad to be back sponsoring the movie series yet again.

“Nest Seekers is proud to continue our long standing tradition of supporting the conservancy and local community,” said Adrian Lupu, who markets property on behalf of the real estate firm. “We look forward to seeing everyone enjoying our neighborhood.”

Borough President recommends approval of OneLIC Neighborhood Plan with conditions

Queens Borough President Donovan Richards announced on Monday a long list of recommendations to approve the city’s OneLIC Neighborhood Plan with conditions.

The sweeping proposal entered the city’s Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP) in April, following certification by the City Planning Commission, and aims to transform a large portion of Long Island City with new zoning rules that would create nearly 14,700 housing units—including 4,300 affordable homes—alongside 14,400 jobs, over 3.5 million square feet of commercial and industrial space and expanded access to the East River waterfront.
