Art lovers will have the opportunity to mold and shape 2,000 pounds of clay later this month when the SculptureCenter revives a tradition that goes back to its founding years.
The SculptureCenter, which has been located at 44-19 Purves Street since 2001, is hosting the event on Aug. 19 and is providing the public with the opportunity to create their own artwork out of the 2,000 pounds of clay that will be at their disposal.
Participants can also join group workshops led by artists to create a statue as a team.
The SculptureCenter’s roots go back to 1928 when sculptor Dorothea Denslow founded it as the Clay Club in her Brooklyn studio.
The event harkens back to those early days when the organization’s artists and students gathered on Staten Island every summer from 1928 to 1939 to picnic and collectively build temporary monumental sculptures out of natural clay.
This will be the first time since 1939 that the organization is putting on the event.
The group sculpture projects will be led by Christian Holstad, Joanna Malinowska, Kate Newby, Hayley Silverman, Ser Serpas, Agathe Snow and Patrice Renee Washington.
There will also be music and food from Hendu’s Sandwiches, The Mill and Hibino LIC.
The event is free to attend and will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The FAKE MRLIC wrote the August 10, 4:09 pm post. I can’t understand why he/she can’t post under an original name for themselves.
Hopefully they won’t charge half a million dollars for me to make a tiny replica of the HIPSTER pink bubblegum sculpture that I can use to practice raging at in the privacy of my own home so I don’t have to go out in public to rage at it.
