Basketball tournament for adults and kids to take place in Hunters Point this weekend

July 19, 2017 By Nathaly Pesantez

The basketball courts on 48th Avenue will be the site of two tournaments this weekend, the organizers announced Friday.

The event, called the LIC Hoops Basketball Tournament, will feature a tournament for adults (ages 18 and over) on Saturday and another for children on Sunday.

The adults tournament will take place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

For adults, there is a registration fee, and there is a limit of 8 teams for the tournament. Round Robin and Queens rules will apply.

The tournament for kids (18 and under) will be hosted at the park the next day, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Kids will be split into different age groups for play, with shorter baskets for boys and girls between the second grade and 6th grade.

Game clocks, drinks, and snacks will be available.

Registration for kids is free, although pre-registration is required, as space is limited.

Both the adults and kids sections will have on-site referees.

“The tournament is just a way for Gantry to give back to the community,” Gantry Plaza State Park manager Andrew Williams said. “We’d like to encourage everyone to come out and support. It’s the summer so we are here for everyone to come and enjoy the park space.

The adults tournament is near capacity, according to Williams. There is still space in the kids tournament.

For parents interested in enrolling their kids, an email should be sent to licyouthsports@gmail.com with the child’s age, the grade they will be going in, and their gender.

Come on now, is it really the kids? Or the millennial entitled parents that are making you wistful for the old days?
