The LIC Arts Open kicks off today offering the public an inside as to the work produced by hundreds of artists who operate in Long Island City.

The festival, in its seventh year, will run through May 21 at a variety of locations throughout Long Island City. The event will occupy more than 80,000 square feet of exhibition space and this weekend more than 150 artist studios will be open.

The art work will cover a number of mediums including photography, painting, sculpture, ceramics and mixed media.

Large installations will be found at venues such as the Falchi Building and Factory LIC. Smaller work will be on display at places such as the Flux Factory, Project Art Space and Matted LIC.  For further details, click here.

For the second year, Long Island City-based artists will also be collaborating with the manufacturer Plaxall to create works of art out of plastics using thermoforming, a process that was invented by the company’s founder, Louis Pfohl, at its 46th Avenue Factory more than 70 years ago.

The works of art will be part of a show called “Plastique Deux,” curated by William Garrett, which opens Friday, and runs for the duration of the festival.

“Plaxall is proud to open our factory to local artists in Long Island City for a second year, and to encourage collaboration between longtime businesses and the neighborhood’s burgeoning art scene,” said Paula Kirby, Managing Director of Plaxall. “Thermoforming was invented by our grandfather more than 70 years ago and it’s always a thrill to see the artists adapt and use this technology to create artwork that captures people’s attention today.”
