Queens Library decides to bring mobile library back to Hunters Point

March 24, 2017 By Hannah Wulkan

The Mobile Library will be rolling back in to Hunters Point next month.

Mobile library service, which offers free Wi-Fi, books, DVDs and other library services out of a truck, was discontinued in Hunters Point last fall once the Court Square branch began having Saturday service and in anticipation of the opening of the new Hunters Point Library.

Now it will be returning every Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m. at Center Boulevard beginning April 9 to serve the area until the new library opens, and will run through late summer or early fall, said a library spokesman.

Queens Library CEO Dennis Walcott announced that the new Hunters Point Library would likely open this fall at a Community Board 2 meeting last month.

The announcement comes on the heels of a campaign from local parents to bring the mobile library back, including a letter to Walcott from the Friends of Court Square Library and an online petition asking that service be reinstated.

“The Friends of Court Square Library feel that there has been an absence of public library service since mobile service was taken away, and we wanted to bring issue back up,” explained local parent Meghan Cirrito, prior to the announcement that the mobile library would be returning. “Families really use the mobile library and we feel that 11 months without service needs to be addressed.”

The library spokesperson said that in addition to interest from the community, the mobile service was brought back as a way to reach out to the community prior to the opening of the Hunters Point library.

I would say this is a tacit admission that the HPS library is not opening anytime soon!

If you read the article, it says the library will open in the fall of 2017. I’m not holding my breath…

Does anyone have an update on the HPS library? Seems like construction has stalled for a while, no?

The Empire State Building was built faster. Pathetic example of present day American disfunction.
