Weekend 7-train service between Queensboro Plaza and 34th Street-Hudson Yards will be down for the month of March.
The MTA announced that the closures are needed to test the new communications system it is installing. Called the Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) the system is expected to help increase 7-train reliability and add service.
“A safe, reliable Flushing Line is critical to the growth of Queens and these projects are critical to the future of the line,” New York City Transit Acting President Darryl Irick said in a statement.
According to the announcement, 7 trains will run between Flushing and Queensboro Plaza, but not beyond, on the weekends of March 3 to 6, March 10 to 13, March 17 to 20 and March 24 to 27 between 11:30 p.m. on Friday to 5 a.m. on Monday.
The MTA will provide free shuttle service at Queensboro Plaza, Queens Plaza, Court Square, Hunters Point Avenue, and Vernon Boulevard-Jackson Avenue stations to get riders to the N and W lines at Queensboro Plaza and back.
The N and W will take riders to Manhattan.
During the weekends with outages, the W train will run to provide increased capacity for the line in to Manhattan.
The MTA is planning similar weekend outages on the weekends of October 20 to 23, October 27 to 30, November 10 to 13 and November 17 to 20 in the fall to continue working on the upgrades.

It seems to me it would be simple enough to run one train on one track back and forth from GC to Vernon every 10 minutes or so, which would accommodate a lot of the people complaining about the shutdown. Once at GC you can take the S to Times Square if need be. Test one track between GC and Vernon Saturday, the other Sunday or alternate weekends. Done.
This makes far too much sense to be adopted by the MTA
Its called single tracking and it has been done before on other lines. I don’t recall if it has been done on the 7 here but the fact that they don’t do it indicates a problem with such. Maybe it’s the nature of the work that requires both tracks shut down, maybe it’s simply a union issue where they consider it a safety issue, IDK. If they could, which I wish they would, it would be better.
Frank,I agree with Paul as I said and with you and F The MTA. MTA seems to have no finish to their ENDLESS work and disruptions. JVB is a waste with his own agenda. As I said they better have FREE shuttles as they are causing the disruptions, they make Free sound as if they are doing us a favor.
And this is why cars are needed in this city.
They are providing a free shuttle between Times Square and Hudson Yards. Why not run a free shuttle between Vernon Jackson and Grand Central instead?
There are alternate subway routes to take into the city hence a shuttle bus from Vernon to GC is unnecessary. Plus it would take longer so why would you do it? Times Sq to Hudson Yards there is no alternative so a shuttle bus is provided.
Tell that to my one-legged grandma.

that would save us a ton of money in Uber fares but they flatly said “No” to this request years ago.
I get it — subway needs occasional maintenance, and sometimes the trains won’t run. But what is it about the MTA that they can never keep to a project schedule and communicate completion dates for their projects? These things just go on and on and on, with nothing communicated to the riders to help them understand what specific tasks are being done and when they will be finished. It’s the information black hole that I find even more infuriating than they fact they can’t ever seem to just finish things they work on in a reasonable time frame.
That is part of Paul’s point – JVB should be pouring the fire on the MTA about the 7 train instead of preening in front of the cameras playing social revolutionary to ingratiate himself to the activists he thinks will propel him to future office. That, and the average MTA employee is about as useful a worker as toenail fungus.

Paul, you are 100% correct. Jimmy Van Bramer’s priorities are on himself for his Mayoral ambitions. He will incite fear among Legal & Illegal Immigrants, the LGBTQ community and others. He wants to look like a “LEADER”. He is probably afraid of the MTA & The Governor.
CBTC if I remember the MTA saying will add 1 train each direction during rush periods per hour. BIG DEAL. Is it worth the money??????????????? And disruptions to people and businesses??????????????
Where’s Mr. Jimmy the “Let’s all Resist and Overthrow the Government because I’m a Council Man that is too good to fill up pot holes” Van Bramer….Shall he lead a movement against the MTA ? Shall he demand the termination or overthrowing the entire MTA board? Shall he march up to Albany and tell the governor to fix this mess? I didnt think so.
