Holiday season comes to LIC, with Christmas Tree and Menorah lightings

Get in to the holiday spirit at several Long Island City events.

Throughout December, several local organizations are planning to host holiday lightings and gatherings to bring the community together for the holiday season.

Tonight, the Hunters Point Community Development Corporation will host its ninth annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony at 6 p.m. Community members are invited to gather along side their neighbors outside at the Vernon Mall at 50-06 Vernon Boulevard for cookies, candy canes, and a Christmas tree lighting. vernonlightsTo continue the celebrations, Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer will be hosting the fourth annual Snowflake Lighting celebration on Thursday, illuminating the lights along Vernon Boulevard.

The event will run from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. outside of LIC Bar at 45-58 Vernon Boulevard, with the official lighting at 5:45 p.m. During the rest of the event, there will be storytelling, caroling, music, treats, and hot cider to ward off the chilly December weather.

To wrap up the holiday season, there will be the lighting of the community menorah in Gantry Plaza State Park on December 26. Kicking off at 6 p.m. at Center Boulevard and 48th Street, the event will have holiday songs, and treats along with the menorah lighting.

There will also be a community lighting of the giant menorah on December 27 at Vernon Mall at 6 p.m. with donuts and hot apple cider.

MTA opens three new modernized elevators at the Queens Plaza subway station in Long Island City

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced the opening of three new modernized elevators at the Queens Plaza E/M/R subway station in Long Island City earlier this month as part of a larger accessibility and safety upgrades throughout the transit system.

The work included a full replacement of the cab and equipment within the cab, shaft and pit, along with two new elevator head houses located at street level. Crews also made modifications to the shaft and pit as needed to allow for new equipment. The elevator machine room and electrical and mechanical equipment received replacements and other modernization efforts for reliability.
