Kids may have started back up at school, but the Summer Kids Program is hosting one last event to cap off the final days of summer.

The Summer Kids Program will host the children’s musical Pirate Pete’s Parrot from the Secret Theatre at LIC Landing on Saturday to finish the series of free activities for kids that ran through July and August.

“The performance is a local favorite from the Secret Theatre that seemed fitting to help us end the successful summer,” said Kadie Black, a board member of the Gantry Parent Association.

The show, which will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday at LIC Landing at Hunters Point South Park, revolves around Pirate Pete searching for his lost parrot.

HPPC President Rob Basch said he expects between 500 to 1,000 people to attend, including parents and children.

The Summer Kids Program was a first-time initiative this year by the Hunters Point Parks Conservancy, with help planning and organizing from the Gantry Parents Association.

According to Basch, the program hosted over 40 events and reached a combined attendance of more than 2,500 children over a seven-week period.

“Summer Kids turned out to be even more successful than we could have imagined.  It was wonderful to see the community come together and create a program that benefited so many kids,” said Basch.

Both Black and Basch said they were pleased with the success of the program in its first year, and plan to continue and possibly expand it next summer.

Would love to bring my kids to this but 3:00 today in the heat and humidity with no shade! No way. It should be done at 6:30 pm.
