The Long Island City community will come together later this month for the fourth annual block party on Purves Street.

The event, titled the LIC Block Party, is being organized by the SculptureCenter.

“It’s a way for SculptureCenter to welcome everyone in the community to get together and enjoy some of the great cultural offerings of Long Island City,” said SculptureCenter Associate Director Ben Whine.

The free event will take place on Saturday, August 20, and will run from noon through 5 p.m. It will held on Purves Street, by Jackson Avenue.

The block party will feature performances by local acts such as Erin Markey, Daisy Press, OTIUM, Jessica Lang Dance, and Bianca Benson, as well as DJ sets by TYGAPAW.

There will also be tents hosting activities ranging from instrument making to micromeditation to live cutting and fashion making, and many other unique activities.

Local artists will be selling their work in the Artists Market, and local food vendors will be on site selling refreshments, including Bartleby & Sage, Doughnut Plant, Hibino LIC, Rockaway Brewing Co., and Stolle.

“We try to make this event as unique as possible,” Whine said. “It’s different from the street fairs that take over different streets of Manhattan every weekend because it is unique to queens and highlights what is special about Long Island City.”

SculptureCenter is a not-for-profit art institution that was founded by artists in 1928 in LIC. According to it’s website, it is “dedicated to experimental and innovative developments in contemporary sculpture.”

I lead a Jazz trio based in Long Island City where we do most of our shows. How do we go about getting booked for next year’s festival?
