Two pillars of Long Island City’s character – art and manufacturing – will combine for a new art exhibit as part of the 2016 LIC Arts Open.
Several local artists will create new works using plastics and the “thermoforming” heat-molding process developed in 1938 by Plaxall founder Louis Pfohl, for an art exhibit called “Plastique.”
“Plastique” is curated by William Garrett and local artists Lisa DiClerico, Kenny Greenberg, Donna Levinstone, Jean-Marie Guyaux and John Long will participate.
These artists were asked to step outside their usual media – from photography to painting to sculpture – to create something new within the parameters of the Plaxall manufacturing process.
“It’s a rare opportunity to mesh Long Island City’s industrial manufacturing with the local thriving art scene” Garrett said in a statement. “As an artist, to step out of one’s comfort zone and experiment with an entirely different creative and manufacturing process, brings new excitement to the work.”
“The generous involvement of the artists and Plaxall’s management and staff add fuel to this new creative process,” he added.
“Plaxall is proud to collaborate with the artists at this year’s LIC Arts Open to produce artwork that celebrates the creative and industrial nature of the Long Island City neighborhood,” Paula Kirby, Plaxall managing director said. “Our grandfather would be thrilled that the thermoforming method he invented is being used in such a new and diverse way to support of the economic and cultural development of our community.”
“Plastique” will be on view in the former Jeffrey Deitch Gallery at the Anable Basin Bar and Grill Event Space (4-40 44th Drive), May 19 through May 22, noon until 9 p.m. daily.
An opening reception is scheduled for Thursday 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Can’t wait to see some of the plastic creations – it is a very versatile material and just needs someone with some creativity (which counts me out) to make something cool.
2016 LIC fArts Open is a conspiracy by DeBlasio to turn LIC into Williamsburg. At least Williamsburg has good bowling alleys.
Plaxall is a good neighbor and I wish them well.
