Urgent Care Center To Open On 50th Ave

UMD

Jan. 5, 2016 By Jackie Strawbridge

A walk-in urgent care center is slated to open next month at 50th Avenue near Vernon Boulevard.

UMD Urgent Medical Care, which operates walk-in clinics throughout New York City, plans to open a center at 5-35 50th Ave. by the end of February, according to spokesperson Audrey Ko. It will be the second UMD center in Queens, with another operating on Northern Boulevard in Flushing.

Urgent care centers provide immediate medical care, generally for patients who are unable to see a primary care physician quickly. Ko said that UMD will provide a variety of services including treating wounds, fractures, colds and allergies, and providing X-Rays, flu shots and STD testing.

UMD centers do not offer major surgeries or have specialized doctors on site, so patients may be referred out depending on their needs, Ko said. The center also keeps a limited supply of vaccinations in stock, so Ko suggested calling ahead.

As is required for certified urgent care centers, UMD will be open 7 days per week with no appointments necessary. The cost of a visit is $125 for a new patient and $115 for returning patients. UMD lists the insurance plans it accepts online here.

According to Ko, UMD locations see roughly 40 to 60 patients per day, and usually have several nurses, a medical assistant and one doctor on site at a time. Ko added that staffing adjustments may be made at the Long Island City location once it opens up.

She estimated that UMD patient wait times average 10 to 15 minutes, up to 30 minutes.

Ko said UMD chose Long Island City as its newest location due to both geography and the surrounding population.

“We don’t have that many locations in Queens, and since we’re a growing company, LIC is definitely the right move to expand over there – it’s right by the 7 train, so it’s very easy to get to,” she said.

“There are a lot of families there, growing families especially,” she added. “So especially for people who are trying to have children or trying to grow their family and your family has a lot of people with different ages, we can cater to all of that.”

There is construction going on at Gantry Park Landing. It looks like offices, so it very well could be another urgent care facility. They look to be almost done.

I hear that there will be 2 urgent cares, but I haven’t seen any construction going on at the Gantry for that yet.

Urgent Care

About a year ago, LICPost reported that North Shore LIJ would open an urgent care center on 50th Ave in the Gantry Landing building. Is that off now? Or will there be two urgent care facilities within one block?

This is very cool, but I wish they opened near to Court Square or the QB Plaza areas for when the 7 train isn’t running.
