Children, parents and library officials packed the Court Square Library Friday to celebrate its expansion.
Library officials and parents said the additional 1,700 square feet in space was sorely needed due to the influx of families to the neighborhood in recent times.
The branch, which opened about 25 years ago, is located on the first floor of the Citigroup Building at 25-01 Jackson Ave. The space was donated by Citi at the time and was intended to serve office staff.
“There weren’t very many people that were living here at the time, so really it was designed as a place to pick up materials, to get a quick read, to read the newspaper,” said Bridget Quinn-Carey, the interim president of the Queens Library.
“Over the years the demand for services has grown,” she said, making note of all the strollers parked outside.
The additional space was donated by Citi and the state kicked in nearly $430,000 for capital improvements. The expansion includes a dedicated children’s room and a new community/meeting room.
Furthermore, a group of local residents also formed a “Friends of Court Square Library,” this fall.
