LIC Corner Café to open next week

LICCorner

Oct. 27, 2015 By Christian Murray

A new café is scheduled to open on the corner of 21st Street and 45th Rd. next week.

Terri Gloyd and Annie Tsantes, who have lived in the area for 30 years, plan to open LIC Corner Café on Monday.

The café, located at 21-03 45th Road, will serve sandwiches, pastries, salads and homemade pies when it opens.

The building is owned by Tsantes’ brother, and Tsantes has lived in one of the units upstairs for years.

She has worked at Manducatis for nearly three decades and also helps her brother take care of the building.

Meanwhile, Gloyd has lived next door to Tsantes for about 30 years. She has worked in corporate sales at Dean & Deluca.

The pair started working on their business plan shortly after a Filipino grocery store abruptly closed at that location about 2 ½ years ago.

Tsantes said, “We were left with a store of expired Filipino products.”

Gloyd said that she had often wondered what could be done with the space. Then, while taking her dog to the dog run at Murray Playground, she came up with the idea of a café. She said that she then approached Tsantes and they became partners.

The women have replaced the walls, floors and ceiling. The café now has exposed brick walls and new woodwork that accentuates the arched windows.

The café can seat about 15 customers.

The café will serve a full espresso menu, cold-pressed coffee and old fashioned Greek coffee.

Congratulations I hope it’s a huge success. Just make sure you don’t have wifi so as all those annoying laptop users working on their next screen play don’t take up your tables for hours on end keeping good paying customers out

Op-ed: The power of representation in healthcare

Apr. 17, 2025 By Dr. Ifeanyi Oguagha

As physicians of color at Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center (JPAFHC), we regularly witness how representation in healthcare can save lives. Our patients – who, like us, are predominantly people of color – walk through our doors not only with medical concerns but also often carrying the weight of generations of inequities that have shaped their health outcomes.
