New City Church’s second annual family carnival at Hunters Point South Park will take place as scheduled on SaturdaySunday, with hopes that a looming storm will miss the festivities.
The free LIC Community Carnival will run Saturday Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
It is uncertain what effect Hurricane Joaquin will have on the New York City area over the next several days. As of press time, the National Weather Service predicts morning rain for Long Island City on Saturday, and a chance of showers at night.
Saturday Sunday will mark the second LIC Community Carnival. Last year, 800 people registered for the event over the course of the day, according to Patrick Thompson, lead pastor at New City Church.
The carnival’s theme is “Pirates and Princesses,” and kids are encouraged to come in costume. Prizes will be awarded to the best dressed.
Activities will include a ring toss, bobbing for apples and a cupcake walk, a game similar to musical chairs where cupcakes are given out for landing in the right spot. Center Boulevard from Borden Avenue to 54th Avenue will be closed for bouncy houses in the shape of a castle and pirate ship.
Participation prizes from candy to small gifts will be awarded for the activities as well. Adults who register for the carnival will be entered to win prizes from local businesses.
“One of our core values of our church is to be an expression of grace to our neighborhood, so we try to find ways to give a gift to our neighborhood,” Thompson said. “The carnival is really just to create a neighborhood gathering for people to connect.”
The carnival is supported by LIC Landing and the Hunters Point Parks Conservancy.
Separately, an Oktoberfest celebration that HPPC was planning at LIC Landing with four local breweries on Saturday has been canceled due to weather concerns.
