A demolition permit was approved last week by the Department of Buildings that paves the way for the bulldozing of 5 Court Square, located on the corner of Jackson and Thomson Avenues
The building includes several stores– including ENC Market, Domino’s Pizza and a Montessori school.
The owner of ENC Market said that he had been informed that the building was being demolished and was waiting to get word that it was time to leave. Meanwhile, Dominos Pizza is about to leave its premises and the Montessori School is looking to relocate nearby.
The demolition permit comes nine months after the property was bought by Jackson 2524 LLC, a Great Neck, Long Island-based company for $15.75 million. The property was sold by AF Court Square LLC and Alanv LLC.
The previous owner(s) filed plans in September 2014 for an eleven story building with 73 dwelling units and ground floor retail. That application was denied April 15, although the current owner is challenging the decision.

I think they’re saying tree will be retail space on the ground floor, I believe some of these service oriented businesses (or others like them) will eventually occupy these first floor spaces. Maybe naively, I believe the needs of the neighborhood will be served.
And what will be the rent of those spaces? You can be sure a deli or a Montessori school won’t be able to afford it.
So now we’re in the bizarre situation in LIC where the newer businesses that came in to serve the needs of gentrifiers are themselves becoming the victims of a more powerful strain of gentrification. Gentrification eats its young, only in New York City.
Montessori put a lot of work into that facility – too bad
Now where the hell am I going to buy last minute supplies and snacks. Yay, walk 15 minutes to Key Food just to get a bottle of dish soap.
no worries HC, Food cellar is opening just a block away..
Coming soon in 2014!.. oh wait..
Exactly HC, my hubby and I give them loads of business. Now I will have to walk to the other deli on 21st street, not the same quality! This sucks!
Exactly HC! This sucks
Wonderful! More condos are forcing out useful businesses that people actually use.
Seriously? The Montessori school now has to move? I was kind of hoping this wasn’t going to go through.
Boo boo boooooo!
