Independent pharmacy opens in Hunters Point

An independent pharmacy owned by a husband and wife team opened in Hunters Point Thursday.

Nature’s Prescriptions, a full service pharmacy that also carries a broad range of herbs, holistic and homeopathic remedies, opened at 5-29 50th Avenue after nearly 8 months of construction.

The pharmacy also offers organic and gluten free products, as well as surgical supplies.

The owners, Arthur and Maya Kalontar, have a long history in the pharmacy business–at one time owning pharmacies in Rego Park and Kew Gardens.

The Fresh Meadows residents became familiar with the neighborhood after taking their children to art classes in the area. “When we were driving our kids to art school, we really loved the neighborhood,” Arthur said. “We noticed there were a lot of young parents whom we could relate to, and whose needs we can understand since we have children of our own.”

NatureTasteThe couple says that there are not enough pharmacies in the neighborhood to cater to the growing population and meet the needs of young parents.

Maya and Arthur said that they recognize that big-box pharmacies such as Duane Reade are in Hunters Point and similar drug stores might also move in. However, they are confident that Nature’s Prescriptions can beat the big stores by offering selective products and quality service.

For instance, Maya said that the store offers skincare products for babies and young mothers, such as Mustela, Dr. Hauschka, Avene, Weleda, Burt’s Bees, and others. The pharmacy also carries a selection of children’s toys, and prescription compounding services for humans and pets.

The owners said that there will be a big focus on customer service. “We will give all of our customers our attention,” Arthur said. “If there is a product they need and we don’t carry it, we can put in an order and have it the next day.” They also offer free pick-up and delivery.

The pharmacy is open from 9 am to 8 pm, Monday through Friday and 10 am to 6 pm on Sunday. It will be closed on Saturdays.
